W. Jerry Langston's Obituary
Jerry was born in his family’s old homeplace on Langston Road in Perry to the late W.C. Langston, Jr. and the late Mary Lizzie Batchelor Langston. A graduate of the Perry High School Class of 1959, he earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Georgia Southern and a Master’s in Health and Physical Education from Georgia College. Jerry’s high school class has remained very close through the years. They have enjoyed many reunions and monthly breakfasts which Jerry was able to attend until the last year. He attended the 50th reunion of his graduation from Georgia Southern where the classmates were recognized at a Georgia Southern Football game. He treasured the friendships he had. Mr. Langston taught at Rumble Junior High School in Warner Robins where he enjoyed teaching and coaching. He then transferred to Tucker Elementary School where he started the Physical Education program and remained there for 10 years. Jerry then began a career in the agriculture business working for several fertilizer companies including Houston Fertilizer and Grain Co. in Bonaire from where he retired after over 20 years of service. Through the years, he coached and officiated in youth sports at Perry Middle School and other local recreational teams. He introduced the sport of soccer to Perry and helped organize the first soccer league. Jerry played tennis and enjoyed yard work, making improvements at the family farm in Moultrie, and traveling. He was fortunate to travel to several European countries, Australia, South Africa, Egypt, and Israel. Jerry was always active in church, clubs, and his community. While he was a member at First Baptist Church of Perry, he served as a Deacon. He later moved his membership to Perry United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and was involved with the United Methodist Men and the Brian Bowen Snak Sacks program. Jerry was a former member of the Perry Jaycees and the Perry Civitan Club. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Perry City Hall several days a week and at the Perry Historical Society Museum. Jerry’s family, however, was his passion in life. The time spent with his children, his grandchildren, and, later in life, his great-grandchildren were all moments that he held close to his heart. Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Langston, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. William Batchelor; his sister, Peggy Jean Langston; a niece, Laurie Majors; and his special Pomeranian companion, Maya. Left to cherish the memories they shared with Jerry are his loving and devoted wife of nearly 54 years, Barbara Rice Langston; his children, Andrea Langston (Jeff Cox) of Byron, and Neill Langston of Moultrie; his grandchildren, Bryce Albritton (Alex) and Emmalee Albritton (Joseph Dukes); his step-grandchildren, Brenton Cox (Jessica), Coley Cox, and Jessica Cox; his great-grandchildren, Renner Albritton, Meila Dukes, Beau Cox, and Adalyn Cox; his siblings, Shirley Langston Hester, Barbara Langston Majors, and James C. Langston; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his Brother-in-law, Bob Rice (Jackie); numerous cousins; special friends, Martha Johnson, June Stubbs, Polly Mohr, Charles and Mabel Collins, and the children of the late Mrs. Rosa Lee Sutton. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
