Nancy Roper Miller-Varner was born on May 29, 1938, to the late Bob and Elvin Bowling Roper in Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up in Perry, Georgia, where she graduated with the Perry High School Class of 1956. Nancy continued her education at Georgia Women’s College, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree. In 1978, she began a long and fulfilling career in the healthcare industry, working as an office administrator for over twenty-five years. She was deeply committed to her work and touched many lives through her care, compassion, and professionalism.
To her family, Nancy was affectionately known as “WAS” — a nickname with a special story behind it. It started with the license plate on the first car she bought, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Her husband, Tom Varner, would see the car in the driveway or under the carport and say, “Where’s WAS?” From then on, “WAS” became a loving nickname that stuck — not just with Tommy, but with the entire family especially the grandkids.
Now, she is still “WAS” — just in heaven. And one day, they’ll be together again. Until then, we ask with love and hope, “Where’s WAS?” — and we know the answer: she’s at peace, watching over us.
Nancy was a remarkable woman. Her love, her laughter, her kindness, and her quiet strength left a lasting impact on everyone she met. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joan Roper Dorsett Couch; and her nephew, Ralph Anthony “RAD” Dorsett, Jr.
Left to cherish the memories are her devoted husband, Tom Varner of Atlanta, Georgia; her children, Craig Miller (Stephanie) of Jackson, Mississippi, and Chris Miller (Claire Chamberlain) of Fishers, Indiana, along with their father, Jack “Jackie” Miller of Tampa, Florida. She is also lovingly remembered by her seven grandchildren; and her bonus children, Betsy Wilber (John) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Tom Varner, Jr. of Cartersville, Georgia.
Nancy touched many lives and leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and grace. God bless you, Mom. Thank you for everything. We will all meet again.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the burial arrangements.
