The family will visit with friends on Saturday, September 6, 2014, prior to the service, from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall at Perry United Methodist Church.
Mr. Davis, the son of Joe H. And Evelyn Parr Davis, was born and raised in Porterdale, GA. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Harlin. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War and continued his service in the Coast Guard Reserves. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Forestry in 1961.
Joe was a lifelong outdoorsman and athlete. His passions included golf, Native American artifacts, and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was instrumental in the establishment of Perry's first youth football league in the early 1970's. He was a member of Perry United Methodist Church and the IHS Sunday School Class.
Mr. Davis began his career in Forestry with Georgia Kraft Paper Mill. He was awarded a Pulpwood Dealership which he operated for 15 years. He earned a real estate brokerage license and operated Big Indian Realty. He became interested in the oil industry and formed Atlantic Oil and Gas, LLC out of Jesup, GA. As the Operating Manager, the research and preliminary demonstrations of this company lay the groundwork for future oil production in this state.
Left to cherish the memories of Joe are his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley Harlin Davis of Perry; his children, Beth Roper (Buddy) of Perry, GA, Matt Davis (Stephanie) of Orinda, CA, and Susan Feehan (Brian) of Warner Robins, GA; his grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "Papa Joe", Brent Roper (Liz), Becca Roper McLeod (Benji), Tyler Davis, Emily Davis, Matthew Feehan, and William Feehan O'Neal; and his great-grandchildren, Lucy Roper and Mac McLeod. He is also survived by three loving siblings, Royce Davis (Sheila), Helen Greene (Jack), and Julie Johnston (Jim) all of the Covington, GA area.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Summerhill Nursing Home and Heart of Georgia Hospice for the kindness and compassion that was always evident in the care they gave.
