PERRY –
James Bronson Stubbs passed away peacefully in his home on February 7, 2024. He was 101 years old. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in Perry Memorial Gardens. Pastor David Miller will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
Jimmy was born on January 20, 1923, in Eatonton to the late Frank and Eunice Bronson Stubbs. After graduating from Eatonton High School, he attended North Georgia College. During World War II, he joined the U. S. Army Air Force and was among the first occupation troops to enter Japan. Upon his return stateside, he continued his education and graduated from the Business School at the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. In 1950, he married Marian Echols of Quitman, Georgia, and began his banking career working for the FDIC. After a few short years, he accepted a position of The Bank of Thomas County in Thomasville, Georgia. In 1964, he moved his family to Perry where, together with a group of local businessmen, he organized and opened the First National Bank of Perry. Over the next twenty-one years, Jimmy served as President of the bank and grew the start-up venture from its initial deposits of $300,000 into a valuable community bank with $48 million in assets. He was respected throughout the community as someone who tried to help people from all walks of life. In retirement, Jimmy enjoyed golf, playing twice a week until he was 94 years old. He also loved fishing at Houston Lake and the Ocmulgee River. But he spent most of his time supporting his family in every way possible.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Ann Garris, Pete Stubbs, Eunice Lee, E.B. Stubbs, and Mary Pratt; and his son, Benjamin Bronson “Bronnie” Stubbs.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Jimmy are his loving wife of seventy-three years, Marian Echols of Perry; his sons, Steve Stubbs (Mary) of Fernandina, FL, Allen Stubbs (Robert Hargrove) of Elko, and Wayne Stubbs (Luelle) of Hayesville, NC; five grandchildren, Bronson Stubbs (Lisa), Tyler Stubbs, Will Stubbs, Ben Stubbs (Jen), and James Stubbs (Katie); seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
The family wants to thank Hands of Hope caregivers and Heart of Georgia Hospice for providing “Mr. Jimmy” with tremendous service and care over the last year of his long and happy life.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
