ELDER GORDON BUCHANAN's Obituary
PERRY –
Elder Gordon Clark Buchanan, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Memorial Heights Baptist Church with the Visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the Funeral at 11:00 a.m. Elder Lewis Kiger will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following the service.
Pastor Gordon was born in Griffin, Georgia, on August 2, 1938. He loved the Lord, wanted to lead others to become Christians, and began preaching The Word at a very young age. He married Barbara, and together, they served at various small churches until 1962, when he began a fourteen-year journey with West Griffin Baptist Church as their lead pastor. When the opportunity arose, Elder Buchanan moved to Perry, Georgia, where he became the Senior Pastor for Memorial Heights Baptist Church. He was on fire for the Lord, made every effort to expand the membership of the church, and excitedly wanted to evangelize the entire community. He would strategically visit neighborhoods, go to each home and knock on the door, and invited each and everyone he met to come to church. After twenty-seven years of faithfully serving at Memorial Heights and over fifty years in the ministry, Elder Gordon decided to retire in 2003. From that time on, he enjoyed a simple life, continued to worship the Lord, and prayed for family and friends endlessly. He enjoyed a second home on Lake Oconee for many years, and spent a great amount of time there basking in the beauty of God’s works in nature and fishing with his favorite angler, his wife, Christine. He would rarely admit, but knew it was true, that she out-fished him most of the time. He loved every minute of their time together, particularly since he felt blessed to have found love for a second time in his life. For the past few years as his health gradually declined and a cruel disease overtook his memory, Elder Buchanan was loved and compassionately cared for by his wife and close friends.
Elder Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; three sisters; and his first wife.
Survivors include his beloved and devoted wife of twenty years, Christine Buchanan of Perry; a daughter; three grandchildren; two bonus grandchildren; three bonus great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many brothers and sisters in Christ.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
