In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Perry Methodist Church, 1002 Carroll Street, Perry, Georgia, 31069.
Carol moved from Dayton, OH as a teenager when her Air Force Civilian family was transferred to RAFB and chose Perry as their home. Early on, she met the love of her life, Jerry Horton, a native of Perry, and she married him at 19 yrs old. Together they raised 3 children and started a life-long journey making Perry their forever home. During the course of their early life together, Carol explored a career path as a dental hygienist but ultimately wanted to stay home with her children. Therefore, she opened a private child daycare operation in her home, looking after numerous children of friends who had to work. These relationships, both the children and parents, have remained steadfast to this day. Several years later, she was offered a position as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant at The Westfield Schools. She held this position for 17 years, excelling in creative learning and producing and directing school programs and kindergarten graduation ceremonies. These annual creative accomplishments over her 17-year tenure earned her the Headmaster’s Award in 2001, inciting a “special kind of love and dedication that is rare in the world today”.
After her retirement from Westfield, Carol was given the opportunity to work for State Bank as the Heritage Club Director. This was a position that was responsible for organizing events for bank members who qualified for extra benefits and privileges. She planned, organized, and executed events, programs, and trips for this special group of people, including trips to the likes of NYC, Alaska, Napa, and even Europe, to name a few. She excelled in this position as well and was so loved by her club members. She held this position for 12 years until she assumed her final position….keeping and helping raise her grandchildren. This was by far her favorite position of all time, and to say she excelled at it is an understatement. They were the second loves of her life and she made every day she had with them special. There was not a school program, ball game, field trip, swimming party, or really any event that they were involved in that she missed. It was the time of her life. So, her life came full circle….she started out keeping children, then explored the other interesting strengths and adventures she was interested in, and ultimately came back to raising children, her grand babies, which was her dream come true.
Other than her grandchildren, her other love was for her church. A member of Perry United Methodist Church since the late1960’s, she was an avid follower of the faith, Sunday School attendee and officer, numerous committee appointee, volunteer, youth counselor and choir member. She loved the Lord and her church with a passion that was visible to anyone who knew her.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elaine Rowell; and her beloved husband of forty-six years, Jerry E. Horton, Sr.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Carol are her loving and devoted children, Jennifer Horton Grantham (Skip) of Kathleen, Cindy Horton Hester (Kyle) of Alpharetta, and Jerry Horton, Jr. (Amber Rigdon) of Perry; her treasured grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “MiMi,” Beau Horton and Riley Horton; and two nephews and their families.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
