BOB BURTON's Obituary
PERRY –
Robert David “Bob” Burton, 70, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cochran. The Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral starting at 12 Noon. Burial will be in Bowers Cemetery in Empire, Georgia, immediately following the service.
Bob was born in Eastman to the late Robert Cecil and Betty Williamson Burton. While his father was in the Navy, the family was relocated to Goose Creek, South Carolina. Bob was a strong, active football player, a very proud thespian of the Drama Department, and a graduate in the Class of 1970 at Goose Creek High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Georgia College. Bob had always been a Florida Gator fan, and quickly welcomed the opportunity to work there. For over twenty years, he was an Accountant in their Business Office who enjoyed his job and the daily Gator atmosphere by which he was surrounded. He retired in 2010, and moved to Perry, Georgia, in 2012 to be near his children. Bob was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in the church’s Family History Center. He was an avid historian of his family’s genealogy. Anyone who knew Bob knew he loved the Florida Gators his whole life. He could be found watching Gator sports – any sport – at any given time. And he likely was nibbling on a Butterfinger candy bar or some shrimp and sipping a Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper. He will always be remembered for his larger-than-life personality.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Bob are his loving and devoted children, Lorie Burton (Jonas Dobkins) of Perry, and Brad Lord-Burton (Gretchen) of Winterville; his grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as “Papa,” Shauna Ayers and Ben Dobkins, both of Perry; his siblings, Connie Swinson (Hardy) of Cochran, Steven Burton (Teri) of Eastman, Gary Burton (Amy) of Minnesota, Karen Golden of Eastman, Shirley Maddox (Mike) of Eastman, and Susan Arnold (Wayne) of Cochran; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
