Alice Leech Gilbert's Obituary

Alice Leech Gilbert, 101, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2012, at Heart of Georgia Hospice Inpatient Care. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Perry United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 20, 2012, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., the hour preceding the service, in the Fellowship Hall at Perry United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions to the Perry Library, 1201 Washington Street, Perry, Georgia 31069 OR Heart of Georgia Hospice, 1120 Morningside Drive, Perry, Georgia 31069.
Mrs. Gilbert and her parents were born on 3 different continents. Her Dad, Charles Leech, was born and educated in London, England. Her mother, Alice Apps Leech, was born in Bombay, India, where her father worked for the British Government. Once in America, her father was a gas engineer and superintendent for the gas plant in Macon, Georgia, in 1928. Alice was born and raised in Macon where she received her education. She attended Georgia Women's College in Milledgeville. She worked for the Houston County Library from 1959 to 1976 where she was instrumental in building the new Perry and Warner Robins libraries as head librarian. Alice and her late husband, Houser B. Gilbert, were faithful members of Perry United Methodist Church for 80 years. She was a member of the Susannah Wesley Sunday School Class, where she was Treasurer for over 50 years. Mr. Gilbert was on the Houston County Hospital Board for over 20 years, and was instrumental in building the first hospital in Perry and Warner Robins. In 2011, Alice was still living independently and enjoying her computer, neighbors, family, and flowers. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Houser B. Gilbert, and her son, Houser W. Gilbert, Jr.
Left to cherish the memories are her sister-in-law, Mrs. Woodrow (Jean) Gilbert of Elko; her nephews, David and Sara Muse, Allen and Donna Tabor, Harvey and Maria Gilbert, and Richard (Dickey) Gilbert, all of Perry, Dr. and Mrs. Robert W. Gilbert of Atlanta, Gary and June Gilbert of Grayson, and William and Pam Gilbert of Duluth; her nieces, Evelyn and Chesley Cawthon of Perry, Cynthia and Will Methvin of Jeffersonville, Mrs. Wallace (Jane) Hogan of Macon, Kay Tabor Kimball of Austin, Texas, and Julie and Don Richerson of Daphne, Alabama; and a host of great-nephews and great-nieces.
