Sybil Keener Smith's Obituary
HAWKINSVILLE-
Sybil Keener Smith, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2013. The family will visit with friends on Monday, July 15, 2013, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will also be held on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 3:00 p.m., immediately following the visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions to Perry United Methodist Church, 1002 Carroll Street, Perry, GA 31069. A private burial will be held at East View Cemetery in Rome at a later date.
Sybil was born in Lindale, Georgia, to the late Homer and Jenny Mae McCool Keener. She lived in Lindale for many years before moving to Perry, where she was for 22 years, then moved back to Lindale for 22 years, and has lived again in the Perry area for the past 8 years. She married the love of her life, Isaac Lanier Smith, and they began their family in Lindale. While her son was young, she was a Substitute Teacher in the elementary school and enjoyed being a Den Mother for his Cub Scouts Troop. Sybil was the Grand Worthy Advisor for Supreme Assembly of the Rainbow Girls in the State of Georgia. Later, when they moved to Perry, she began working as a Secretary for Judge Armitage. Sybil eventually became the Librarian in the Houston County Law Library that was housed at the Houston County Courthouse in downtown Perry, from which she retired. A member of Perry United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the Howell Cobb Sunday School Class and sang in the Church Choir. A true Southern lady with a servant's heart, she enjoyed volunteering in various capacities throughout the community. Sybil spent many hours gardening, pruning and nurturing her plants and flowers, which she cared for dearly, to create a beautiful flower garden for everyone to enjoy. In fact, she and her husband were very proud of the lovely variety of camellia they donated to Masse Lane Gardens of the American Camellia Society. Sybil was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Isaac Lanier "Flop" Smith; her son, Brian Thomas Smith; and two sisters, Elsie K. Brown and Dorothy K. Ray.
Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Smith are her devoted and loving son and daughter-in-law, Zach and Maggie Smith of Hawkinsville; her grandsons, Garett Smith (Ashley) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Andrew Smith of Americus; two sisters, Margaret K. Duke and Charlotte K. Shepard, both of Lindale; several nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends.
Condolences may be left for the family in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com.
