SMITTY SMITH's Obituary
PERRY –
Louis David Smith, Sr., known as “Smitty” to everyone, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2022, after a sudden discovery of cancer. He was 88. Services will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home with the Visitation at 10:00 a.m. and the Funeral at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Tommy Perkins and Reverend Tom Carruth officiating. Interment will be in Perry Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
Smitty was born on March 13, 1934, in Florence County, South Carolina, to the late Basil and Lorene Tedders Smith. After graduating from high school, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Robins Air Force Base. During that time, he met and married the love of his life, Mildred Shugart, on August 31, 1954, and the couple settled in Perry where they have lived since then. After being honorably discharged from the military, Smitty accepted a position with Civil Service at RAFB from where he retired as a Supply Supervisor after twenty-seven years of service. He enjoyed fishing and went on many trips to Eufala, Alabama, fishing at night with his buddies, Paul and Wayne.
Smitty was very smart and could fix and/or build anything made of wood, and he loved to remodel homes. His talents and visions of woodworking and remodeling were put to good use. Retiring at such an early age, he soon began a second career as a self-employed general contractor in Middle Georgia with Carl and T-Bo at his side for many years. Smitty loved spending time with his family and taught his son-in-law and his grandsons everything he knew about woodworking and building. Taking “Miss Millie” out to eat was one of his favorite things to do, which he did as often as he could.
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Louis David Smith, Jr.; and his sisters, Eloise Smith Etheridge and Mamie Cobb.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Smitty are his loving and devoted wife of nearly sixty-eight years, Millie Shugart Smith of Perry; his daughters, Debbie Smith of Perry and Vicki Bell (Al) of Byron; his grandsons, Dustin Bell and Brandon Bell; his great-grandchildren, Copeley Bell, Lucas Bell, Judson Pope, Annaleigh Bell, and Asher Bell; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
