Ruthie was born on December 10, 1937, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Shuford and Ruth Jefferies Price. She was raised in a holy, sanctified home, and those values would guide her throughout her life. She graduated from Norview High School in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1956. Shortly thereafter, she married the love of her life, Leon Stewart, Sr., with whom she shared a remarkable 60-year marriage until his passing in 2018. Together they built not only a family but also a legacy of faith and hospitality.
Ruthie was a homemaker in the truest sense. Her home was a haven of warmth and encouragement for all who entered. She worked alongside her husband, Leon, in his residential building business, keeping the books and helping families turn houses into homes. Her natural talent with colors and interior decorating greatly aided their homebuyers and created a warmth to be seen as well as felt through her gracious spirit.
Her gift for hospitality extended far beyond décor. Ruthie was an exceptional cook and gracious hostess who delighted in bringing people together. Her gatherings were known for their warmth and perfection, each one infused with care and attention to detail. Bible verses about hospitality seemed written just for her; she lived them daily. Ruthie’s green thumb was legendary, as she could make anything grow. She loved her plants, and they flourished. At her home in Charlotte, NC, she grew a tremendous rose garden. She delighted to bring roses cut from her garden to dear friends and family. Whether nurturing plants or people’s spirits, she had a rare ability to cultivate beauty and faith wherever she went.
A devout Christian from an early age, Ruthie became sanctified at just ten years old. Her passion for spreading the gospel never weakened. She was deeply involved in ministry throughout her life and played a pivotal role in establishing sanctified congregations in Memphis, Tennessee, and in Charlotte, Wilmington, and Greensboro, North Carolina. As the wife of a Deacon and a pillar of her church community, Ruthie led by example, teaching the word of the Lord with clarity and conviction. Her evangelical spirit touched countless lives as she guided others toward Christ with grace and wisdom.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and woman of unwavering faith, Ruthie’s life was a testament to love, service, and spiritual dedication. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of faithfulness to God’s word and devotion to those around her. Her life continues to inspire all who knew her—a shining example of Christian grace lived fully.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Leon Stewart, Sr., whose memory remained ever-present in her heart.
Left to cherish the precious memories they made with Ruthie are her son, Leon Stewart Jr., of Jamestown, NC; her daughter Cindy Stewart Mustin (Gene) of Greensboro, NC; her grandchildren, Allie Stewart, Sara Stewart, Olivia Clelland (Parker), Emma Rothfuss (Jake), and Gray Mustin; her great-grandchildren, Isaac and Ellis, with another expected soon; her siblings, Jim Price Jr., Henry Price (Flora), and Linda Roan (Doug); as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
