Life Legacy
Ruby Elizabeth Whisonant Jackson, 83, passed away peacefully with her girls by her bedside on December 5th, 2017. Ruby was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on December 17th, 1933 to the late Edward Earl Whisonant and Brassie Mae Cheek Whisonant. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Jackson; her second husband, Jerry C. Jackson; and her grandson, Jackson S. Combs.Ruby grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and attended Winthrop College there. She moved to Perry in 1962 with her husband Joe. Ruby worked as a telephone operator, and later she was a stay-at-home mother. She later went to work as a paraprofessional in the Houston County School system where she worked with children for 27 years. Upon retirement, she volunteered at her church and then went to work for seven years at the Perry Visitors Center. Dancing and singing her way through life, Ruby has been a source of strength and joy in the lives of all who knew her. She was adventurous, devoted, and determined. And when life told her no, Ruby refused to hear it. She was a founding member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church and a member of the Daughters of the King. She loved her family fiercely.She is survived by her loving and adoring daughters, Connie Lockerman of Bonaire, Deborah Combs (Brian) of Macon, and Cissy Black of Perry; her granddaughters, Kristie Person (Erik) of Athens and Stacey Lockerman of Washington, D.C.; her great-granddaughter, Dorothy Rubyann Person; her brother, Bobby Whisonant; and her sister-in-law, Gloria Whisonant; as well as many cousins.Visitation will be at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry on Thursday, December 7, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2017, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Perry with Reverend Lorna Erixson, Reverend Cynthia Knapp, and Father Tom Arledge officiating, with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry. A reception at St. Christopher's will follow the burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 886 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201; Heart of Georgia Hospice Inpatient Care, 1120 Morningside Drive, Perry, GA 31069; or St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 1207 Macon Road, Perry, GA 31069. The family would like to thank the sweet and caring nurses who took care of Ruby at Heart of Georgia Hospice Inpatient Care.
