In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or WROC, Women Reaching Our Community, P. O. Box 438, Perry, GA 31069, or The Assembly at Warner Robins, 6040 Watson Boulevard, Byron, GA 31008.
Pete was born on August 28, 1931, to the late David and Lucille Stokes in Uvalda, Georgia. Pete began his Christian journey when he was saved at the age of 12. By age 13, Pete was already teaching Sunday School, which he did most of his life. Every day, Pete began the morning with a cup of coffee and God’s word. A good and faithful servant, he lived his life just as the Bible says we should. Always studying and reading about Jesus, he was a continuous learner while teaching the Word. As a former member of Haynesville Church of God and International City Church of God, he would often fill in as a lay speaker to deliver the Sunday morning message when his Pastor was away. Currently, Pete was a long-time member of The Assembly at Warner Robins where he was also a member and former teacher of the Faith Builders Sunday School Class. He enjoyed dining with family and friends, fellowshipping, and sharing the gospel whenever he could. He was a member and Past President of the Full Gospel Business Men Fellowship of Perry.
Pete enjoyed a long and lucrative career as a Commercial Builder and a Residential Builder and Developer. Moving to Warner Robins in 1951, he and his brothers began Stokes Brothers Construction, specializing in sheet rock and floors. Once he branched out on his own with Pete Stokes Builders, many convenience stores, restaurants, including the first Tastee-Freez in Warner Robins, and other businesses were carefully constructed with Pete’s talent and expertise. The personal and unique characteristics used in the construction of each home he built touched many families in Middle Georgia. His work ethic was unmatched, and his employees and sub-contractors knew he expected nothing but high-quality work. He proudly developed several subdivisions including Cherokee Hills in Warner Robins, Gwendolyn Acres in Haynesville, and Brendale and Constance Court in Perry. Pete was always active in the community, and he helped to organize the first active Kiwanis Club in Warner Robins. When he moved to Perry in the early 1980’s, he continued his membership with the Kiwanis Club of Perry. For many, many years, Pete could be found working in his personal yard, precisely manicuring the lawn and shrubs to create an inviting and welcoming home for family, neighbors, and friends. Once retirement began, Pete was seen walking through the streets of Perry, enjoying time with his wife, Brenda, and admiring the hometown he had helped to grow.
Pete was predeceased by his parents; his first love and wife of thirty-two years, Quinelle Yeomans Stokes; a grandson, Luke Stokes; his brothers, H. L. Stokes and his wives, Martha Stokes and Betty Stokes, J. N. Stokes and his wife, Etheel Stokes, and Freeman Stokes; his sister Betty Stokes Maye Wilkes and her husbands, Robert E. Maye, Winfred Norris, Tillman Manning, and Seabie Wilkes; a bonus daughter, Lynn Rowland Wright and her husband, Michael Wright; his bonus sons-in-law, Wes Conner and Ted Schubert; a nephew, Lamar Stokes; and a niece, Paulette Stokes Stinson.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Pete are his loving and devoted wife of forty years, Brenda Rowland Stokes; his children, Connie Stokes Storey (Tommy), Chris Stokes (Marsha), Gwen Stokes Monroe (Kevin); his bonus children, Angela Rowland Conner and Shannon Rowland Schubert; his grandchildren, Neilie Rogers, Heather Rogers, Shane Stokes (Christy), Danna Stokes Pearson (Sean), Ashley Craddock, Josh Monroe (Danielle), Lindsey Monroe, Mallory Wright Herrick (Matthew), Holly Wright Jordan (Randy), Madison Conner, Mary Wesley Conner, Morgan Schubert Walker (Cody), Sean Schubert, and Jackson Schubert; his sister-in-law, Betty Sauls Stokes; nineteen great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews with whom he enjoyed spending time.
The family would like to give special thanks for their gentle care and loving kindness for Pete to Heart of Georgia Hospice, including Chaplain David Miller, Nurses Pam, Beverly, Leslie, Chas, and Kay, and Social Worker Robin.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
