Mrs. Newberry was born in Perry to the late Frank and Mabel Gurr Greene. A 1950 graduate of Perry High School, she also graduated from Georgia State College for Women. She taught 5th grade for the Houston County School System until her first son was born, at which time she became a homemaker. For most of her life, she worked to create the perfect family environment in which to raise her boys. Through the years, she enjoyed taking care of everyone, including her children, all of their friends, and her church friends. Mrs. Newberry enjoyed cooking, especially baking cookies. She began baking Christmas cookies in September each year and stored them in her special cookie freezer until the time came to deliver them to all of her family and friends. She was a former member of the Akikta Club of Perry. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels for over 15 years, and also volunteered at the Samaritan Closet. Mrs. Newberry was a member of Perry United Methodist Church and the IHS Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Newberry are her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Ben Newberry of Perry; her sons and their wives, Pep and Melissa Newberry of Macon, and Keith and Linda Newberry of Corinth, Mississippi; her grandchildren, Philip Newberry and Laura Newberry; and many nieces and nephews.
