MELVIN NELSON's Obituary
George Melvin Nelson, 94, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 13, 2018, while working in his yard clearing limbs from the recent Hurricane Michael that passed through Perry. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. with a brief service to be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. A private burial for the family will be held in Oaklawn Cemetery in Ft. Valley on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Melvin was born in Goodwater, Alabama, and moved to middle Georgia when he was in 11th grade. He graduated from Byron High School and immediately began working at Penn Dixie Cement Company. He attended Mercer University at night and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He continued working as a Chemist at Penn Dixie, which later became Medusa Cement Company, and retired after 47 years of service. Melvin also owned and operated Nelson’s Sharpening Service where he sharpened knives, blades, scissors, and tools for nearly 40 years out of his home. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Perry. Melvin was preceded in death by his brothers, Dan Nelson and Charles Nelson; his children, Shirley Horne, Diane Vantrease, Ronnie Collier, and Alan Nelson; and a grandson, Chris Nipper. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Ruby Nelson of Perry; his children, Martha Scott, Gene Collier (Susan), Gail Moll (Howard), Kenny Collier (Connie), Beverly Wilson, and Craig Nelson; eighteen grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Nettie Faye Schollenberger Pace; his brother, Jarrett Nelson (Betty); and many nieces and nephews.
