A lifelong resident of Houston County, Mrs. Ruth was born in Kathleen and graduated from Bonaire High School in 1939. In the early years after high school, she worked at the cement plant in Clinchfield while the male workers were serving in the military during World War II. Upon their return from the war, she dated and eventually married the love of her life, Elmer Hutto, in 1946, and accepted a job at Peed’s Grocery in Clinchfield. The couple built their first home in Haynesville in 1947, and Mrs. Ruth lived there until her final days on this earth. Through the years, Mrs. Ruth was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Haynesville for over seventy years and had a passion for the Lord. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was the Assistant Church Treasurer, was active with Women on a Mission, was a member of the AAA Sunday School Class, and most importantly to Ruth, a Prayer Warrior. Friends and family would say that Mrs. Ruth could pray like no other, and even when friends came to visit her when she was sick, they would ask her to pray. Recently, at her 100th birthday party, many memories and details of changes and transformations that Mrs. Ruth witnessed through her life were shared. Her strong presence will be greatly missed by her family, friends, church, and community.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Mrs. Ruth are her loving and devoted daughters, Theresa Singletary and Gail Yansom; those who lovingly referred to her as “Nanny,” her grandchildren, Turrah Benton (Scott), Tina Wilson, Pamela Hunnicutt, Hollie Aaron (Brian), and Rusty Yansom (Jennifer); her great-grandchildren, Jordan Turner, Blake Roberts (Megan), and Hunter Benton (Sheyenne Dudding), Alex Hancock (Dusty), Johnny Singletary II, Charlie Murphy, Nicolas Aaron, Emily Aaron, and Anna Grace Yansom; her great-great-grandchildren, Addi Roberts, JanaBeth Roberts, and Colton Hancock; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Fannie White Heard; her beloved husband of fifty-nine years, Elmer Hutto; her sister and brother-in-law, Edna and JB Davis; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Florence Heard, and Glenn and Sybil Heard; and her sons-in-law, Johnny Singletary and Micky Yansom.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
