Mary Katherine Linton Chapman, 88, joined her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 13, 2015.
Graveside Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery. The family may be contacted at the residence. The family suggests contributions to Westfield Schools or Thornwell Home For Children, P.O. Box 60, Clinton, S.C. 29325. Mrs. Chapman was born in Society Hill, Darlington County, South Carolina to the late Jacob DeWitt Linton, Sr. and Minnie Lundy Linton. She spent most of her early years in Bethune, S.C. before moving with her family to Perry in 1942 where she graduated from high school in 1944.
As a descendant of the Linton, Ruthven, Price, Lundy, Kelley, Graham, and DeWitt families who were some of the earliest to settle South Carolina's PeeDee Region. Mrs. Chapman became the Linton family's matriarch and historian.
Mrs. Chapman has been a longtime member of the Perry Presbyterian Church where she was a longtime teacher at Wee Wisdom Kindergarten. She was fondly known as "Miss Mary" to her students.
Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by her infant triple daughter, Denise Emmie. Also preceded in death were sisters, Lillie Mae and Cleo McQuage; brothers, Jacob D. Jr., Harry L., Otis H (died in WW 11) and Frederick B. Linton, and step-mother, Mamie Hardy Linton.
Left to cherish her memory are husband of 69 years, Norlis C. "Skeet" Chapman; son, Donald and daughters, Debra Callie Griffin and Diane Lee Rider. "My Momma's" seven grandchildren put a sparkle in her eye- Clinton Chapman, Molly Rider Moss, Bruce Rider, Jacob Rider, Andrew Griffin, Ashton Griffin and Ashley Griffin. The extra sparkle was from great-grandsons, Parker Griffin and Seth Rider. She is also survived by two special nieces; Cathy Linton Watkins, Cindy Linton LeVasseur and families of North Carolina.
