MARY EUGENIA BURKHALTER SHELNUTT's Obituary
PERRY –
Mary Eugenia Burkhalter Shelnutt, 83, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2022, in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., and the service will start at 3:00 p.m. Interment in Perry Memorial Gardens will be private.
Mary was born in Ideal, Georgia, to the late Samuel and Arretter Howell Burkhalter. She graduated from Byron High School and was the Valedictorian of her class. She married the love of her life, Roy Shelnutt, and lived in Perry most of her life. He worked in law enforcement and was eventually Perry Police Department’s Assistant Chief. Mary was always a supportive and loving wife and mother, managing their home and children around his varied work schedules. After his untimely death in 1999, her strength and determination were evident as she continued taking care of her family. She was delighted each time a new grandchild or great-grandchild was born and treasured each moment spent with them.
Mary was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of nearly forty years, Roy Shelnutt; her brother, Jerry Joe Burkhalter; and a daughter-in-law, Janet Sue Shelnutt.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Mary are her children, Gregg Shelnutt of Perry, Tracie Daye (Daryl) of Fort Valley, and Joey Shelnutt (Dena) of Fort Valley; her grandchildren, Ben Shelnutt (Kelly), Leah Baker (Bobby), Maria Carrasco, Devin Daye, Wesley Fowler (Crystal), and Trey Johnson (Laura); and eleven great-grandchildren.
