Born on October 31,1944 in Perry, Georgia, Martha Lynn was the daughter of the late Gardner and Laura May Draper Watson. DeeDee grew up in Perry and was excited and proud to have been the Lead Majorette for the Perry Panthers. After graduating from Perry High School in the Class of 1963, she continued her education at Women’s College of Georgia and transferred to the University of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She began her teaching career at Monroe High School in Monroe, Georgia, where she met the love of her life, Coach Ed Hunt. After the two educators married, Martha Lynn spent most of her career at Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia, teaching US History, Psychology, and Sociology while also being a Sponsor of the school’s Beta Club for over twenty years. Her passion for teaching and learning was evident, but her love for the individual students was what made her unique and loved. Selected by her peers, she received the Teacher of the Year award. Mrs. Hunt retired in 1998 after thirty years of sharing her knowledge and positively influencing countless students who entered her classroom.
Inspired by this love, her daughter, Laura also graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Education and has been following in her mother’s footsteps teaching high school Computer Science, Accounting, and AP Computer Science for nearly thirty years, which made her mom extremely proud.
Upon retirement, Martha Lynn and Ed then moved to Braselton, Georgia, and continued to be active members of Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church until health issues arose. She was genuinely interested and always eager to share in the conversations and experiences of everyone with whom she spent time.
Martha Lynn was the best “Mimi” to her only grandson, Drew. There was never a moment when she wasn’t supporting, encouraging, and expressing her love for him. From providing his own special place at their home when he visited in Braselton, to wearing matching Columbia fishing shirts for dinners out at her favorite beach, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, to attending so many of his sporting events throughout his high school career, there was never a doubt that Martha Lynn adored being his Mimi. She was most proud of Drew’s graduation from Clemson and his commission as a NUPOC Officer in the US Navy.
Martha Lynn was a passionate lifetime fan of Georgia Bulldogs football. For more than twenty-five years, she and Ed attended games in Athens and “on the road.” The friendships made through the years were so close that the tailgates often included multiple generations of teachers and former students. It was truly incredible. Martha Lynn lived life to the fullest. She was an active member of her Jazzercise class and loved to spend time traveling the United States with Ed and their close friends. Much time was also spent enjoying the company of her friends that came to be known as “The Magnificent Seven.” Her annual beach trip with “the girls” was always a time she treasured being with lifelong friends from high school and college. Martha Lynn enjoyed her neighborhood Bunco group and loved reading the Upper Room as her daily devotional.
Martha Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Gardner and Laura May Watson; her sister-in-law, Dawne Shaw Watson; and her loving husband of fifty-five years, Edwin Luther “Ed” Hunt.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Martha Lynn are her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Todd Lawton of Moore, South Carolina; her grandson, Drew Lawton, and his wife, Sophie of Fernandina Beach, Florida; her beloved baby brother, Draper Watson of Perry, Georgia; her nephews, Terry Watson (Jennifer), and Dr. Travis Watson (Dr. Cameron); her niece, Christen Schmidt (Don); her great-nephews and great-nieces, T. Draper Watson III (Margaret), Forrest Ann Watson, Baker Watson, and Vivian Watson; and a host of lifelong friends whom she considered family.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry, Georgia, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
