MARIAN WELCH CORN's Obituary
PERRY –
Marian Welch Corn, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2025, at home surrounded by loving and devoted family. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church Campground in Perry. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12 Noon in the Chapel, and the funeral will begin at 2:00 p.m., also in the Chapel. Burial will be in the Campground Cemetery immediately following the service.
Marian was born on March 29, 1935, to the late Oliver and Beulah Carpenter Welch in Moultrie, Georgia. She moved at age eight with her family to Perry where she attended elementary school. When not in school, Marian would help her mother serve lunch to the Prisoners of War who worked on her father’s farm on Houston Lake Road. Later in life, she delighted in sharing stories of experiences from those days. A long-time member of Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church, Marian became sanctified on the campground in Perry as a teenager. After several years in Houston County, Marian’s parents looked for better opportunities north and moved the family to Decatur, Georgia. Soon thereafter, Marian graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School. It was in Decatur that she met and married the love of her life, Fred Corn.
While creating a caring and encouraging environment for her family was the greatest job she had, Marian worked in the commercial construction industry where she was a Bookkeeper and Office Manager for Bill Smith Grading. She retired after nearly twenty years there. Shortly after retirement, she accepted a position in the Gwinnett County Probate Court where she worked until her final retirement a few years later. Marian’s life revolved around her family, and she loved spending time with them. Traveling together was one of her favorite pastimes, and their times overseas in Italy, Switzerland, and Paris were among some of her most treasured experiences. The annual girls’ trip to the beach with Marian was always a highlight of their summer. In 2020, Marian moved back to Houston County to Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church Campground, where she had spent a great deal of time through the years, worshiping the Lord and sharing her faith with loved ones. Her goal was to live to age ninety, and she almost did that, passing away just twenty-two days before her ninetieth birthday.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of forty years, Fred Corn; her daughter, Melody Lynn Corn Sweeney; her brother, Hugh Welch; and her son-in-law, Russ Ryals.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Marian are her children, Pam Slappey (Wayne) of Braselton, Debbie Ryals of Commerce, Rick Corn (Lilly) of Grayson, and Amy Corn of Braselton; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Carolyn Welch Lockhart (Lenard) of Jacksonville, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
