Mack was born in Perry to the late Howard, Sr. and Beatrice McElmurray Peyton. While a student at Perry High School, he played basketball under the famous Coach Eric P. Staples and graduated in 1950. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Once back to Perry, Mack began his career with Perry Police Department where he served and protected his community for nearly ten years. As a young father, he would take his family on fishing trips to the Ocmulgee River and other local fishing ponds, encouraging sibling love, teamwork, and relaxation. He learned early in life to take care of everything if you want it to last. He gave special care to his home, especially the yard, by planting, nurturing, and grooming the flowers and shrubs, for which it eventually became known as the neighborhood’s most immaculate landscape. Mack was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Perry.
When the opportunity presented itself, Mack accepted a position with Beckham Brothers of Perry, transporting gas to stations on a daily basis. Through the years, Mack exhibited his loyalty and proved his value to the owners, and they promoted him to Office Manager. He retired after over thirty years. A long-time member of the Houston Lodge #35, Free and Accepted Masons of Georgia, he was also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a Noble of the Shrine.
Later in life, Mack learned to play golf in his spare time. He was a long-time member of Perry Country Club and loved the camaraderie built there among neighbors and friends. After years of practicing form and technique, he celebrated his accomplishment of a Hole in One on #5 on March 1, 2001. While much of his retirement time was spent on the golf course, Mack also worked part-time with STAT as a financial and pharmaceutical courier. He was a devoted husband, Daddy, Granddaddy, brother, uncle, and friend. Mack loved his girls, and when the grandchildren came along, he loved spoiling them.
Mack was preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Lucille “Lucy” Kovac Peyton; his brother, Howard Peyton, Jr.; and his sister, Peggy Joiner.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Mack are his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Louise Garvin Peyton of Perry; his children, Pattie Queener of Montezuma, Sheila Harris (Wayne) of Perry, Linda Fesmire (Chris) of Eatonton, Susan Helton (Billy) of Macon, and Gary Brantley (Rhonda) of Macon; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; his sister, Shelby Lane of Longview, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Thanks, from the family to Dr. David Cox, NP Amanda Cox, NP Heather Sorrow, Perry Fire Department Engine 1. Special Thanks to Mack’s caregivers, Frances, Vanessa, Janice, Pearl, Jackie, Pat, Margo, Naydean, and Tyi; and Enhabit Home Health, Traditions employees, Matt Riggins and NP Jennifer Black, and Laurie Kinsler.
