Lorraine Hershey Funk's Obituary

Lorraine Hershey Funk, 86, passed away peacefully early in the morning on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Perry United Methodist Church with Reverend Jenny Jackson-Adams and Reverend Roland Fall officiating. Interment will be on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. The family respectfully suggest donations to the Pink Ladies Auxiliary, Perry Hospital, 1120 Morningside Drive, Perry, GA 31069.
Mrs. Funk was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the late Harry and Elsie Martin Hershey. She grew up in Lancaster and graduated from McCaskey High School. She began working as a CRT inspector for the Navy at the local RCA plant during World War II, and later took a position with the Slaymaker Lock Company. She met the love of her life, Martin R. "Dick" Funk, and they married in 1948. He worked at Olmstead Air Force Base then was transferred to Robins Air Force Base in 1966, which is when they moved to Perry. A homemaker most of her life, Mrs. Funk strived to create the perfect environment in which to raise their children. Earlier in their marriage, her daily routine consisted of cooking dinner every day then calling their children in to eat with the famous dinner bell, an old ship's bell that the children remember fondly. A great seamstress, Mrs. Funk made many of her daughters' clothes, particularly the cheerleader uniforms and prom dresses. When the Perry Hospital opened, she began volunteering with the Pink Ladies Auxiliary, and continued with that for over 40 years. A "job" she was passionate about, Mrs. Funk logged over 10,000 volunteer hours there, and spent several years as their treasurer. She worked for a period of time as a Secretary for Whipple and Parkinson Insurance and was a member of the Tawasi Club of Perry. Mrs. Funk and her husband loved to travel, and she was always the perfect navigator, keeping explicit notes of each and every journey together. She was a Fair Cracker at the Georgia National Fair for over 15 years, and she was a member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary. A long-time member of Perry United Methodist Church, Mrs. Funk was a member of the Howell-Cobb Sunday School Class and a former member of the Joy Choir. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Hershey Smoker and Nancy Hershey Supplee.
Left to cherish the wonderful memories are her loving, devoted husband of 64 years, Martin R. "Dick" Funk of Perry; her children, Janice Puckett (Darryl) of Waleska, Sally Tolleson (Ross) of Perry, and Richard Funk (Lisette) of Macon; five grandchildren, Tripp Tolleson, Ansley Tolleson, Kelly Tolleson, Corey Funk, and Andrea Funk; her sister, Norma Landis of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; her brother, Ronald Hershey (Sharon) of Middletown, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
