Lee, also known as “Peachy” most of her life, was born in Griffin, Georgia, on November 5, 1944, to the late Minnie and Kemp Daniel. A 1962 graduate of Griffin High School, she furthered her education at Valdosta State College where she was a cheerleader, was an active sister in the Kappa Delta Sorority, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. While in college, Lee also met the love of her life, a basketball player for whom she often cheered, Tom Johnson. After graduation, the couple married, moved to Griffin where she taught school for a year, then moved to Waycross where she continued her career in education and had both of their children. While their children were still young, the family moved to Thomasville, Georgia, where they settled for twenty-one years. Peachy became the Librarian for the Thomasville Public Library, a job that she loved dearly, because she loved books and reading as well as promoted literacy throughout the county. She also worked as a Paralegal for the Open Door Adoption Agency and was the Head Docent for the historical museum, Pebble Hill Plantation. Peachy was a selfless lady, representing the old adage “Service before self,” always thinking of others before herself. The City of Thomasville honored her dedication and service by naming the “Peachy Johnson Day.” Nearing retirement age, the Johnsons moved to Lake Oconee for a few years and subsequently relocated to Daphne, Alabama, where they became active members of the community for twenty years. A Godly example, Peachy was always a trustworthy friend and wonderful neighbor to so many. She acquired a multitude of friends, many who claim she was one of the most gracious ladies to live in Thomasville, Georgia, and Daphne, Alabama. She was “Peach” to her grandchildren, her husband’s best friend, and a bright spot in the lives of those she encountered every day. For the past five years, Peachy has lived in Perry near family. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Lee was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ann Domingos; and her nephew, Hal Domingos.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Peachy are her loving and faithful husband of fifty-seven years, Tom Johnson, Sr. of Perry; her son and daughter-in-law, Tom, Jr, and Lisa Johnson of Collierville, Tennessee; her daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Ann and Chip Champion of Perry; her grandchildren, Fulton Johnson, III of Nashville, Tennessee, Camille Grant of Collierville, Tennessee, and Claire Champion of Perry; and a niece, Lou Ann Drewry.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
