KRISTINA MOORE SIMMS's Obituary
PERRY –
Kristina Moore Simms of Perry passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022, following a lengthy illness. She was 86 years old.
Ms. Simms was an educator, writer, political leader and advocate for the mentally ill.
After graduating from Mercer University at the age of 19, she worked for the Red Cross in Japan for several years. She later received her Master’s degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas.
She had a long career in public school education, teaching English and then serving as the guidance counselor at Macon County High School.
She was the author of “Macon, Georgia’s Central City”, and also had a number of essays and poems published. Her books include “The Stradivarius in the Basement,” “A Year at the Lake,” and “A Second Spring.” She was also a talented nature photographer. After retiring from Macon County High School, she became active in advocacy for the mentally ill through the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI).
She was a leader in Democratic party politics, first in Houston County and then in statewide efforts. She served as President of The Georgia Federation of Democratic Women.
Ms. Simms was born in Montezuma, GA, the daughter of Violet Moore and Sidney L. Moore, Sr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Craig Bergwall of Marietta, her grandchildren, Christopher Bergwall and Caroline Bergwall; her sister, Charlotte Moore, and eight nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Claudia Simms; her sister, Adrienne Bond, and, her brother, Sidney L. Moore, Jr.
