Judith Dorothy Wood's Obituary
Judith Dorothy Wood passed away on April 22, 2015 at her home surrounded by family. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at The Pavilion at Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, GA. The family will visit with friends on Monday, April 27, 2015, from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home.
Born March 6, 1936 to Fred and Marian Schaefer of River Forest, Illinois, she married Billie J. Wood on April 26, 1957, and the two traveled the world as Bill served in the United States Air Force with their two daughters, Wendy J. Ledbetter and Lori S. Abercrombie, of Perry. Judy shared her love of camping and fishing, golfing, sewing, quilting, and needlework with her growing family. Judy’s fondness for dogs and animals in general was best exemplified when she became known as Perry’s “Duck Lady,” for her faithful walks to the pond at the Perry Country Club to feed the geese and ducks there daily. She was loved as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, best remembered for her kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and loving heart. She was always quick to volunteer with the Girl Scouts as a troop leader when Wendy and Lori were growing up. She worked in civil service at some of the bases she and Bill were stationed at, then worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at several local Perry businesses until her retirement. Sadly, Bill died in January of this year after a four-year-long illness. Judy cared for Bill continuously until his passing, graciously sacrificing much to keep him with her at home. Judy was diagnosed with cancer a month after Bill’s death, and remained at home, cared for by her children and grandchildren, and with the assistance of Heart of Georgia Hospice, she passed quietly in her home Wednesday morning. Survivors also include her brother, Dick Schaefer of Colorado, grandchildren Jennifer M. Bowen (David) of Cochran, John A. Daugherty, II (Kristian) of Elko, Jason W. Daugherty of Perry, Brandon T. Daugherty of Perry, Lindsay R. Abercrombie of Port St. Lucie, FL, Mathew P. Abercrombie (Sarah) of Macon, and Spring C. Dutra (Randy) of Prescott, AZ; and great-grandchildren Johna G. Bowen, Emilie M. Bowen, John A. Daugherty, III, Lucas B. Daugherty, and Zachary P. Daugherty. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son-in-law John A. Daugherty and granddaughter Autum F. Daugherty.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the wonderful, caring staff at Heart of Georgia Hospice for their assistance in keeping Judy comfortable these past weeks and guiding her children through this difficult time. Friends and family who would like to remember Judy may honor her with donations to Heart of Georgia Hospice.
