Lawrence was born in Ozark, Alabama, to the late Leon and Bonnie Cook. He and his family moved from Phenix City, Alabama, to Perry, Georgia, in 1976 when he accepted a position with Kellwood Company as an Industrial Engineer where he worked for thirteen, retiring as the Shipping Manager. He retired after twelve years of employment. Lawrence was an avid gardener and spent many hours planning, planting, and harvesting each year. He was a member of Smith Station Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, before moving to Perry where he faithfully attended and was active in Houston Lake Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Leon Cook, Jr.
