John Wilbur Powell Jr.'s Obituary
The last six months of John Wilbur Powell Jr.’s life served as a testament to his strength of spirit, unshakeable faith, and cheerful disposition. Through aggressive lymphoma and many daunting rounds of chemo, he remained optimistic and never complained – except about drinking Ensure. He continued to share his love of collectible toys, model planes, sci-fi, and conspiracy theories with his family and medical staff alike. His caregivers quickly grew to adore him for his warmth and sense of humor, and his family is forever thankful for the abundant love and joy he added to their lives. He was a person who never lost his childlike heart, who always put others first and wanted nothing more than to spend time with the people he cherished most: his wife, Debra; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Andrew; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Emily; his parents, John and Frances; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Mary; and his niece and nephew, Bradley and Meagan. He is survived by a large extended family and many friends who loved him dearly. They all hope that he’s enjoying the great X-Box in the sky and a gourmet feast with his late nephew and father-in-law, and his beloved dogs, Jack and Angel. His family is glad he’s free now to drink as much Dr. Pepper as he wants and to express his unique fashion sense along the streets of Heaven. They’re certain he’s entertaining the angels, and look forward to the day they hear his sweet laughter again. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of John to the Double Hit Lymphoma Foundation at http://www.tdhlf.org.Funeral service will be held in the Event Center at Serenity Funeral Home on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 12 noon with visitation starting at 10 am until service time. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
