PERRY – John Henry “Johnny” Houser, Jr., 76, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 18, 2022, from injuries sustained in a tragic bicycle accident. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Read Obituary
I've heard stories of Johnny for many many years from my brother and from Matt. Johnny was always involved in something interesting and I only heard good things about him. I am so sorry for his passing and extent my sympathies to Matt, LuAnn and the rest of the family. The Houser family has always been a credit to Perry. May Johnny rest in peace.

John was a loyal, dependable, capable friend for almost 50 years. He contributed to so many great experiences—from GA State canoe school to skiing in Colorado just this past winter. Many were GWS trips with his good friends. So many great memories: bicycle trips-- riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway with Southern Bicycle League and the Great Allegheny Passage with GWS; canoe trips--the Okefenokee, Bull Sluice on the Chattooga, Thanksgiving canoe trips including the Suwanee with its big clear springs, the small winding Blackwater River in Florida, and the one where the river went underground (fortunately it resurfaced before long); and ski trips--building and living in an igloo for 3 days in Yellowstone on a NOLS course, backcountry skiing to 10th Mountain Division huts in the Rockies, a gorgeous full moon ski on Roan Mountain when the snow sparkled in the moonlight, and skiing on forest service roads that John discovered off of Mt Mitchell (one was 7 miles, all downhill!); and camping--in the mountains and on casual GWS river trips, a GWS backpack trip when owls screamed in the middle of the night right overhead. John was a master at researching and discovering. He also knew how to make things work, and when he fixed or built something, it was done right.

When we lived in Macon, Ga, we got to enjoy John in the local Georgia Wilderness Society. Like someone else mentioned he was known for taking a little nap at the drop of his hat and continuing on paddling in a while. John was a really nice person and he will be missed. He was an important member of our close-knit GWS group. John and Betty Schaefer.
I am sorry for your loss to the family. We the people of Gws will definently miss him. I enjoyed paddling with him,I remember when he went on the Ohoopee with us ,plus some other trips. He managed a nap,but would get upin time to catch up with us. Bail Youman
I was saddened to hear of John's passing on Monday. We were friends and classmates from the class of '64 at Perry High school. John was also a friend of my younger brother, Michael Snyder, who shared John's love for the outdoors during our family's time in Perry in the early 1960's. Matt, you and the rest of John's family will be in my prayers for healing and peace.
John, you will be missed! I spent many happy hours in your company, paddling and pedaling. You were a true friend and enthusiastic outdoorsman. I remember you happily biking in the rain on the Great Allegheny Passage. Remember all your help reinforcing our barn. I know your family will value your memory even more than I do. I had the honor and pleasure over the last 15 years of canoeing, hiking, backpacking, camping, and cyling (in at least three states) with John . He was a skilled outdoorsman who could handle himself and help his companions in any situation. He was a valuable member of his outdoor club, the Georgia Wilderness Society. He was always a gentleman and a gentle man. Although quiet, when he spoke he was always thoughtful. I will miss traveling and sharing campfires with him.
