Joanne Thornton Wilson's Obituary
Joanne Thornton Wilson, died August 2, 2014 in Belleville, NJ. Born October 12, 1929 to the late Albert Sr. & Josie Mays Thornton. She was born in Choctaw County and raised in Mobile, Al. Graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School and received her B.S. degree in Education from Tuskegee Institute. She later received her Master’s degree in Education from Alabama State University. She taught at Mattie T. Blount High School retiring after 31 years. In 2013 she was honored by the Gordon Parks Foundation for her family’s 1956 Life magazine iconic photo-essay “The Restraints: Open and Hidden.” She was preceded in death by her father, mother, two sisters, seven brothers and two husbands. She leaves to cherish her life through memories two devoted children, son Michael Wilson of Mobile, Al, and daughter Sheila W. Mosley of Belleville, NJ. Five grandchildren: Mycah Wilson (Oakland, CA), Justin Mosley (Belleville, NJ), Keena Wilson (Monroe, NC), Jordan Mosley (Belleville, NJ) and Jiselle Williams (Belleville, NJ); one sister in law Helen Wilson (Crystal Springs, MS), devoted friends Ben Sr. & Mary Williams, Janet Buffington, Clastine Diamond, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and former students.Visitation will be held Mon Aug 11, 2014 from 10-12 noon at Third Baptist Church, 811 S. Atmore Ave Whistler, AL. Rev. N.L. Powe, Pastor. Service to follow at noon. Arrangements under the direction of Serenity Funeral Home, Theodore, AL.
