A lifelong resident of Unadilla, Janet was born in Unadilla to the late J.E. and Laverne Barron. She graduated from Unadilla High School and grew up a Baptist. When she married the love of her life, Jimmy Scott, the family attended Unadilla Methodist Church, to where she moved her membership early in their marriage. The couple raised three active boys, for whom she never missed a sporting event. During baseball season for over ten years, Janet was delighted to record every detail of every play in the scorekeeper’s book for Fullington Academy. When her grandchildren came along, she was the proudest grandmother following and cheering for them in their various sports as long as she was able. One of her greatest passions in life was her family, to whom she was greatly devoted. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and great independence.
A long-time member of Unadilla Methodist Church, Janet enjoyed sharing her love for the Lord through various positions at the church including Sunday School teacher, member of the Administrative Board, and member of the Juanita Brannen Friendship Circle. Her favorite thing to do at church, though, was play the organ for services, which she did for many years. The time she spent on church activities through the years was precious to Janet, and she attended regularly until her health would not allow her to be there.
From an early age, Janet learned what was needed to keep a business efficient and productive when she attended Macon Business College. As a young bride, she accepted the position as Bookkeeper and Secretary for Farmer’s Warehouse, continued with Birdsong Peanuts, and retired from a successful career after nearly sixty years in the same position. She loved her job and was dedicated to the farmers and the peanut industry. Often, Janet was known to help families with their farm books and taxes, as those were things that came easy to her. During the off-season, Janet enjoyed spending time near water, at the river and at the beach, resetting her mind for a new season and refreshing her soul.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of nearly thirty years, James D. “Jimmy” Scott, Sr.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Janet are her sons, Jay Scott (Lynn) of Unadilla, Johnny Scott (Debbie) of Perry, and Jerry Scott of Unadilla; her grandchildren, Jaclyn Howard (Ramsey) of Hawkinsville, Joanna Vaughan (Clay) of Byromville, Keith Pace (Jennifer) of Niceville, Florida, Christie Amerson (Steven) of Perry, Morgan Hendrix (Brooks) of Dublin, Jenna Scott of Unadilla, and Thomas Scott of Unadilla; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister, Vivian McLeod (Jimmy) of Perry; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Special Thanks from the family to Hands of Hope – Perry and Compassus Hospice. The family would also like to thank Cynthia Webb, Lapatrice Ray, and Brenda Lester for their kindness, compassion, and loving care of Mrs. Janet. Each of you are greatly appreciated.
