I grew up with James in Perry Georgia. I played with James and his brothers Olin, Bobby, and Alfred. I knew well his sisters, Betty, Nancy and Gail. James, Olin, and I played on Perry's 1953 state championship basketball team. In baseball, James played second base, and myself at shortstop. The two of us turned many double plays as Perry High marched to the state baseball finals in 1953. James and his family lived on Tucker Road, the first house at the top of hill--which always tested by legs climbing it on my bicycle. I knew well his mother Evelyn and father, Joe, who held a responsible job at the Penn-Dixie Cement Plant outside Perry. My home was a bicycle trip away as the Powell lived two blocks from downtown Perry at 800 Ball Street. James was gifted with a brilliant mind and would be successful pursuing any endeavor. I consider James a great friend and would love to have one of his family members call me sometime. May God bless you all!

Our PHS class of '53 was made up many remarkable men like James. He was a good friend during our high school years and was an expert on all the major league baseball teams and could recount the teams scores, RBI's, home runs, and batting averages of every player. May he rest in peace in God's merciful arms. Amen.
