JAMES C. "STUMP" LANGSTON's Obituary
PERRY, GA – James C. “Stump” Langston, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, following a courageous fifteen-year battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Perry. Reverend Bobby Nix will officiate, and the family will greet friends during visitation one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Westfield School, First Baptist Church of Perry House of God Campaign, or Cancer Research.
Stump, as he was affectionately known, was born on July 16, 1943, to the late W.C. and Mary Lizzie Batchelor Langston. He was born and raised on the family farm located on Langston Road, just north of Perry. Being an avid sports fan, Stump earned his nickname in high school for being as hard to hit as a tree stump while running the football for Perry High School. He also enjoyed watching and participating in all sports from football, baseball, basketball, and golf to bird hunting and especially fishing.
Growing up on the farm was a point of pride for him. He would tell stories about working with his daddy, family, and neighbors on the farm with a fondness and memories that he always cherished. After graduating from Perry High School in 1961, Stump received his certification to be a licensed surveyor and spent thirty-five years with the Georgia Department of Transportation, serving in several positions. He started on a survey crew and rose to a Project Engineer by his retirement. His work ethic, which was established on the farm, was unquestionable. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Perry for over fifty years.
Stump was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry Langston; his sister, Peggy Langston; and his brothers-in-law, James Hester and Jack Majors.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Stump are his daughter and son-in-law, , Kristie and Bill Hill; his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Debbie Langston; his grandchildren, Chandler Hill, Colby Hill, Chloe Hill, Cal Langston, and Mandy Langston; his sisters, Shirley Hester and Bobby Majors; his sister-in-law, Barbara Langston; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and his loving fiancé of five years, Carole Ray, who took such great care of him throughout his illness and especially during his final days.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
