JAMES JOSEPH "JIM" ROGERS SR.'s Obituary
WESLACO, TX -
James Joseph Rogers, Sr. “Jim," 88, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022, at his home in Weslaco, Texas. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022, 11:00 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry, Georgia, with Father Eric Filmer officiating. In honor of Jim’s love of golf and playing in Perry and Ft. Valley, please wear golf attire or casual clothing.
Jim was born on March 4, 1933, to Charles Anthony Rogers and Emma Blanche (Bokr) Rogers in Chicago, Illinois. The Rogers family moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1939 and settled in Weslaco. Jim's father opened Zulfer & Rogers and handled Alamo Fruit & Vegetable Company sales. In 1954, Jim's father partnered with his brothers and opened Charles A. Rogers Produce & Son in Donna. Jim graduated from Weslaco High School, where he was active in football, basketball, and baseball. He was also the Senior Class President. Jim continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Officer and served in Germany for two years. After being honorably discharged, Jim returned to Weslaco and joined his father and brothers in the family business. Jim's career in produce spanned over 65 years, and he was an active member of the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers and Shippers Association, serving as President at one time. In his career, he became involved with several Georgia peach growers including Lane Southern Orchards, Evans Farms, and Pearson Farms. He was also an active contributor to his community, a Weslaco Lion's Club member, Weslaco Elks Lodge member, and Boy Scouts-Troops 34-41 volunteer. Jim married Barbara Dean in 1971, and they raised three children.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma Rogers; his brothers, Chas A. Rogers (Betty) and Bill Rogers (Bette); and his sisters, Eileen Ryan (Ed J.) and Margie Billings (Bill).
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Barbara Rogers; his children, James Joseph Rogers “Jim” Jr. (Laura), Wendy L. Rogers, and Anthony M. Rogers; his grandchildren, Victor Rogers and Julie Rogers; and numerous nephews and nieces.
