Helen Elizabeth 'Lib' Harris' Obituary
Helen Elizabeth “Lib” Burtz Harris, 86, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry. Interment will be in Perry Memorial Gardens immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Haynesville, 2953 Highway 341 South, Hawkinsville, GA 31036. “Miss Lib” was born and grew up in Marietta. When she was 16, she came to visit her aunt who took her to Highway Haven where she met the love of her life, George W. Harris. Surprisingly enough, she stayed in Middle Georgia and married George that same year. Lib accepted a position in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base in Aircraft Budget Management and retired from RAFB after 20 years of service. She began working with her husband in the Peach County Magistrate Court then moved to the Tax Assessor’s Office, the Child Support Office, and eventually retired again as the Deputy Tax Commissioner of Peach County. While Mr. George was a Shriner, Miss Lib was a member of the Daughters of the Nile. She traveled to conventions with them and was named Queen of the Nile for a year. She loved traveling, which she did extensively, and once drove across the United States. Miss Lib was a longtime member of Tharpe Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. When Tharpe Memorial became Crosspoint Baptist Church, Miss Lib continued to be very active and loved her church. Later in life when she could no longer go to church on her own, she began attending First Baptist Church of Haynesville with family members, and thoroughly enjoyed her time worshiping there. Miss Lib was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Moon Burtz; her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, George W. Harris; an infant daughter, Janet Elizabeth Harris; and her sister, Annie Mae Hall. Left to cherish the memories they made with their Mama/”MeeMaw” are her children, Elaine Martin-Weigandt (Steve) of Byron, George R. Harris (Cynthia) of Haynesville, Keith Harris (Rhonda) and Kenneth Harris (Annelle), both of Slocomb, Alabama, and Karl Harris (Debra) of Warner Robins; eight grandchildren; three bonus grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; five bonus great-grandchildren; two bonus great-great-grandchildren; her brothers, Laverne Burtz and Alan Burtz; and several nieces and nephews. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
