Hattie Irene Hayes' Obituary
Hattie Irene Steele Hayes was born April 29, 1915 to Noy and Hattie Watkins Steele in Wilcox County. She was a life-long resident of Mobile, AL departed this life for eternity June 1, 2014. She was preceded in death by eight sisters, four brothers, and her husband Lloyd Hayes of Mobile. Irene’s formal education was acquired at Prairie Mission and Wilcox Training Presbyterian School located in Millers Ferry, Alabama. August 16, 1943 Irene enlisted in the Army Core receiving basic training in Army Administration where she served as clerk general. She also served overseas in Birmingham, England with the Central Postal service and received several decorations and citations, Prvt. First Class American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European and African Middle Eastern and WAC Service Ribbon. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted sister, Willie A. Coleman (Montgomery, AL) three sister-in-laws, Modecia Steele, (Cleveland, OH), Thelma Steele (Atlanta, GA), and Bettye Levins, (Mobile, AL), one brother-in-law Reverend Willie P. Pettway, Sr. (Mobile, AL), seven step-children, 22 devoted nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. She was a faithful member of Memorial Presbyterian Church until she became ill where she served as historian, Elder, and member of the choir. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 9:00 – 11:00 am followed by A Celebration of Life at Memorial Presbyterian Church Reverend Morgan Taylor officiating. Dignified and professional services entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home. The internment will be held at Lawn Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Memorial Presbyterian Church or Wilcox County Presbyterian Board of National Mission Museum in Memory of Hattie S. Hayes.
