PERRY-Harris Kendall Chapman, 97, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to the Perry Historical Society, 901 Northside Drive, Perry, GA 31069, or Heart of Georgia Hospice, 1120 Morningside Drive, Perry, GA 31069.Mr. Chapman was born in Powersville, Georgia, to the late Homer and Lillian Phillips Chapman. He was a 1938 Graduate of Perry High School and was the final living member of the 44 students in the class. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in the North Africa, Sicily, and Italy Campaigns. After he returned to the states, he was sent to serve in the Pacific. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Mr. Chapman returned to Perry and opened Chapman Ford Tractor, which he owned and operated for many years. Subsequently, he ran Harris Chapman, Inc., contracting with farmers and other businesses in Middle Georgia. Mr. Chapman worked all the time, continuously providing for his family. He was so proud that he was able to send all 3 of his sons to college. Mr. Chapman was a long-time member of Perry United Methodist Church and the Howell Cobb Sunday School Class, and was recently recognized as the oldest living member of the church. Each year, for most of his adult life, Mr. Chapman enjoyed planting and growing a garden, sharing the fruits of his labors with his family and friends, which he continued to do even in his last year of life. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Short Chapman; and his brothers, Tom Chapman, Bill Chapman, and Howell Chapman.Left to cherish the memories of Mr. Chapman are his sons and their wives, Ken and Susan Chapman of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Wayne and Yvonne Chapman of Perry, and Jim and Paula Chapman of Germantown, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Jim Chapman (Bonnie), Beth Simmons (Byron), Todd Chapman (Brennan), and Clay Chapman (Keri); 4 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Becham; and several nieces and nephews.Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com.
