MARSHALLVILLE –
Gunnery Sergeant Russell Lee “Russ” Deatherage, USMC, Retired, 59, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 9, 2022. A Visitation and Viewing will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry. All other services are private.
Russ was born in Missouri and earned a Bachelor’s Degree at Embry-Riddle University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, moved to various locations across the United States and abroad, and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant after twenty-one years of service. Upon his return to civilian life, Russ worked as a Program Manager for an aerospace engineering company. An outdoorsman, Russ loved kayaking and fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was so very proud that all four of his children joined the military, following his example. Russ had lived in Marshallville for the past fifteen years.
Russ was preceded in death by his father, Harley Dallas Deatherage.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Russ are his loving and devoted wife of thirty-two years, Karen Sunman Deatherage; his children, Jake Deatherage of Wisconsin, Buck Deatherage, serving in Maryland, Logan Deatherage (Stephanie) serving in Missouri, and Devyn Deatherage, serving in Iraq; his grandchildren, Levi Deatherage, Declan Deatherage, Ella Santos, and Vanti Santos; his mother, Kay Taloney of Idaho; his siblings, Dallas Deatherage (Deb), Gary Neer, Tom Delana, Frank Delana (Sue), and Sonya Delana; and many nieces and nephews.
