George Potter saved my life. He arrested me in April, 1988 in Columbus, Ga when I was 27 but treated me respectfully & professionally. Over the course of the next few months leading up to my trial, He gave me personal encouragement and advice that I thankfully took to heart and never committed another crime. He was a special, unique man & I’m sure that he influenced many others like he did me. Because of him, I was allowed to became a successful stock equities trader & real estate investor. I married a wonderful woman and our life is great. Our daughter just graduated from University of Texas. I have a wonderful, fulfilling life - in no small part due to Gearge Potter.

Chief I have just learned that St. Michael has swept you away to be with our lord and savior. You fought the good fight my dear old mentor. Your friendship and guidance that you have taught me through the years will never be forgotten. You had a part in making me the man I am today. Chief Potter is 10-7 the remainder of the shift.
Great guy. Very sorry for your loss. God speed George Potter. May God hold you and keep you forever.
Connie - I just learned of George's death as I stopped in Perry on my way back to Marietta. George helped me focus on safe teen driving...on a program I run called SafeTeen Georgia (a program of the Safe America Foundation which Inrun from Marietta). I had not talked to George for several years... But I always admired him. And, were close when he was head of the GACP. He was a fine man... And one of those rare public safety officials who I not only respected but admired for his faith in God... and his commitment to family and friends. I will always be thankful I knew George. And proud to call him a friend. Len Pagano, President, The Safe America Foundation
Connie, I just found out about the passing of the Chief. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I'm so glad you have your daughter and granddaughter with you. Your old drive-thru teller at CBT Bank Cindy
Connie,we spoke of the lost of George already but I just wanted to memorialize my thoughts here one last time. As I mentioned earlier, George and I met in the early seventies as police officers in the Columbus, PD. George and I renewed our friendship about three years ago. We would text each other about world events. What impressed me most about George was his intellectual abilities and his capacity to get along and on with most everyone that he met. If you challenged him from an intellectual perspective, it is likely that you would lose. I have to say that I lost many battles with him on this front. As I reflect on our friendship and the communications that we had recently, I'm reminded that it was a tender and touching one. Last year we text each other doing the Auburn/Alabama game. Facing Florida next George text, " well Judd, I don't believe auburn can beat Florida and I can't beat this cancer." His last text to me was at 3:05 Am on the 18th of August. I sent him a response as soon as I got up and recognized that he had called. I wish to God that I had answered the text then. He was positive to the very end and I'm a much better person from having known him, and am so glad that I got a chance to travel a few miles down the road with him. He was a friend of mine. With deepest RespectJudson M. Ray

So sorry for your loss Connie and Erica. George was such a great mentor and teacher. I will never forget what he did for me when I worked under him at the Columbus Police Department in the Office of Professional Standards. He went over and beyond in helping me get the position I have held now for 21 years. He touched so many lives, and he will be greatly missed.
Lisa and I are sorry for the passing of George. Connie , you and your family are in our prayers.
