CHRIS LEWIS HAFLEY's Obituary
PERRY – Christine “Chris” Lewis Hafley passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. She was 101 years old. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to the donor’s favorite charity.
Chris was born on December 11, 1921, in Leary, Georgia, to the late Louise and Sanford Wiggins. She graduated from Morgan High School, Calhoun County, in 1938 and attended Georgia State Women's College, Valdosta. She met Earl Lewis, and they married on September 22, 1940. They resided in Albany and Cartersville and established their family home in Perry in 1949. Chris was a homemaker, raising her sons, Freddy and Stanley, in the home they built on Gilmer Street, later Beckham Circle in 1950. She also spent time as a substitute teacher and often supported her husband in the daily operations of their family business, Lewis Truck & Tractor. Chris loved entertaining in their home and hosting a fish fry with her family at their pond house. For many years, Chris was an active member of many clubs including The Sorelle Club, supper clubs, bridge clubs, and sewing clubs. She was a long-time member of Perry United Methodist Church and the IHS Sunday School Class.
Chris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly fifty-five years, Earl Lewis; her son, Freddy Lewis; her granddaughter, Betsy Lewis; her brother, Roberts Wiggins; and her husband of five years, Bill Hafley.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Chris are her son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Mary Lewis of Mansfield; her grandchildren, Lane Lewis McCormack (Patrick) of Smyrna, Shannon Lewis Crook (Drew) of Cumming, Clayton Lewis (Logan) of Perry; four great-grandchildren, Molly Langford (Taylor), Christa Jones, Reid Crook, and Morgan Crook; two great-great-grandchildren, John Langford and Betsy Langford; her daughters-in-law, Kathy Lewis and Beth Gilmore; and two nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff and owners of The Oaks Nursing Home, Marshallville, for their excellent care and compassion.
