BILLY ROLLINS NEAL's Obituary
DANVILLE-
Billy Rollins Neal, 88, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, adventure, and love.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, on February 24, 1931, Billy was the only child of James and Hazel Neal. From the time he was a boy, he gazed at the sky and wondered what it might be like to fly into the clouds. That childhood dream became the guiding force of his life.
Billy’s journey in aviation began in Miami, Florida, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute, where he studied airline mechanics. His career carried him to Piedmont Airlines, Saturn Airlines, and later Zantop Airlines in Warner Robins, GA, where he worked as a flight engineer. When Zantop closed, Billy continued his career in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base until retirement.
But for Billy, flying was never just a job—it was a passion. He studied helicopter piloting, flew countless small planes, managed a local airport, and chose his final home with its own airstrip so he could always be close to the skies he loved. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to restore helicopters and airplanes, and his adventurous nature earned him the nickname “Wild Bill.”
Beyond his devotion to aviation, Billy was a devoted husband to his wife of 53 years, Diane Abbott Neal, who preceded him in death. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Billy was a proud father to Sandra Neal (Ruben) of Garland, TX; George Neal (Cindy) of Perry, GA; Edward Neal of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL; Kathy Neal of Bonaire, GA; and Susan Hodgson of Boston, MA. His ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were his joy, and they will carry forward his spirit of wonder and determination.
Billy’s life reminds us to chase our dreams, to look up at the sky with curiosity, and to find joy in the journey. His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to an organization of your choice.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com.
