Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. A private interment will be held in Andersonville National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Perry, 1102 Main Street, Perry, GA 31069.
Betty was born on July 21, 1931, in Laurens, South Carolina, to the late William Hugh Blakely and the late Elizabeth Paul Blakely. Upon graduation from high school, she married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Robert “Henry” Dawkins. A homemaker all of her life, Betty worked hard to create a loving and encouraging environment in which to raise her family. She also worked as a kindergarten teacher for Houston County Board of Education for twenty-two years, helping to provide a firm foundation on which the students’ education would rest. Betty was a member of the Akikta Club of Perry, a ladies’ service organization. She enjoyed bake sales and various fundraisers through the years with her friends in the club. A long-time member of First Baptist Church of Perry, she attended the Joy Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Dawkins was preceded in death by her parents; her brother-in-law, Michael R. Dawkins; her sister, Hariette A. Green; and most recently, her loving and devoted husband of seventy-four years, Henry Dawkins.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Betty are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Paul and Cindy Dawkins of Laurens, South Carolina; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy D. and William H. “Bill” Hightower, IV, of Thomaston; her granddaughters, Lindsey E. Dawkins (Justin) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Madison O. Pope (Johnny) of Valdosta, and Meredith H. Melton (Jordan) of Hartsville, South Carolina; his great-granddaughters, Avery Pope of Valdosta, Blakely Ann Melton of Hartsville, and Taylor Pope of Valdosta; her great-grandson, Julian Rhys Thomason; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
