In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Cross Point Baptist Church, 645 Perry Parkway, Perry, GA 31069.
Betty was born in Cordele on June 23, 1940. She grew up with four siblings which taught her the value of working together for the good of the whole, as well as the importance of being a strong, independent lady, which was very advantageous to her later in life. As a young lady, she met and married the love of her life, Paul Stanley Matthews. They lived in Perry for years, and Betty worked in the meat department at Piggly Wiggly where she enjoyed meeting people and making friends in the community. When she and her family relocated to Newnan, Georgia, she worked for a company preparing food to be sold in vending machines around Georgia. She was honored to perform such job duties as she felt it important for consumers to know that an actual person made the sandwiches with fresh ingredients and love. After a number of years, she accepted a position to work at the Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House, once again doing what she enjoyed, food prep. She learned to thrive in the fast-paced environment, quite the opposite of how she grew up and had spent most of her working years. She was a member of Turkey Creek Baptist Church in Newnan. When her husband passed away unexpectedly in 2005, Betty soon returned to familiarity, family, and friends, and moved back to Perry, where she lived out her life. An excellent cook, she was well-known for her homemade Brunswick Stew and those perfectly shaped biscuits with fingerprints. Betty was a fabulous Mother to her only son and his wife, whom she treated like her own daughter, and the best Grandma any girl could ever ask for. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ida Belle Dorough Tharpe; her siblings, Woodrow Tharpe, Pearl Bailey, Ruth Gloss, and Marvin Tharpe; and her beloved husband of nearly forty-three years, Paul Stanley Matthews.
Left to cherish the memories they made with Betty are her loving and devoted son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Robin Matthews of Perry; her only grandchild, Cheryl Anne Matthews; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
