BARNEY A SMITH SR.'s Obituary
PERRY –
Barney Alvin Smith, Sr., 95, died on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at his home in Perry following a brief illness. As per Mr. Smith’s wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to Amedisys Hospice Care, 2952 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Roberta, Georgia, and was the son of the late Emmett and Nora Smith. He moved to Macon as a young man, where he competed as a race car driver for two years in GASCAR, a predecessor of NASCAR. He and his wife, Hilda Joy, raised their three sons in Macon, where he lived for many years before settling in Perry for the second half of his life.
Mr. Smith owned several businesses over the years, most notably Barney A. Smith Motors in Macon and, later, in Perry. He was an avid golfer and hunter, with an impressive collection of trophies in his home. Mr. Smith was well-liked by all for his playful smile, quick wit, and generous nature. Beloved by his family, he was a great storyteller and a loving father and grandfather.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his four brothers, Welborn Smith, Dozier Smith, E. Raymond Smith, and Bobby Lee Smith; one sister, Shelby June; his first wife, Hilda Joy Smith; and his second wife, Virginia Smith.
He is survived by his three sons, Barney Smith, Jr. (Jan), Scott Smith (Debi), and Tony Smith (Sonja); six grandchildren, Mandy, Trey, Heather, Stuart, Leslie, and Lauren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews.
