The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., the hour preceding the service. A Private Interment in Perry Memorial Gardens will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions to Kingsford Place Personal Care Home, 505 Progress Avenue, Hawkinsville, GA 31036 or Pruitt Health Hospice, 708 16th Avenue, Cordele, GA 31015. Mrs. Smith was born in Blanton, Florida, to the late Frank and Fleta Blocker Childers. At 17, she met her one and only love, Sam Smith, Jr., who had just accepted a position at Robins Field. After a 3-week courtship, they married and settled in Perry where they lived their entire lives. Mrs. Smith delighted in creating the perfect Southern atmosphere in which to raise her children. She attended business school and took a job as a Secretary in the Maintenance Department on the Flight Line at Robins Air Force Base, where she worked for 30 years. Upon retirement, she continued the traditions she had set in place of spending time with her family - her children, and then her grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as "Nana". Nana was an avid reader and spent many hours gardening, enjoying the beautiful butterflies that her flowers attracted, as well as the various birds that visited her yard daily. She enjoyed traveling on short trips to visit her sisters. Mrs. Smith attended Cross Point Baptist Church. After her husband's passing, the "love of her life" became her precious, sweet baby, Annie, a miniature lap dog who helped Nana so much by loving her through her illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Sam Smith; and a sister, Margie Nealy. Left to cherish the memories of Nana are her children, JoAnn Knighton (Ray) of Cochran, Linda Golden (Tom) of Perry, Cathy Barker (Paul) of Haynesville, and Keith Smith of Perry; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mary Emily Jeffries of Dade City, Florida, and Geneva "Babe" Laidler of Orange Park, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Dr. Brantley and the staff at Cornerstone Medical Associates, Dr. Culclasure and the staff at Middle Georgia Heart and Vascular Center, Dr. Taneja and the staff at Aegris Nephrology and Internal Medicine, Perry Hospital, Houston Medical Center, Pruitt Health Hospice, and especially the staff at Kingsford Place in Hawkinsville. Each of these organizations showed such genuine care, concern, and love to Mrs. Smith and her family since she became sick in November of 2013. For that, the family of Mrs. Smith are eternally grateful. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
