Jon Everett Cagle

Jon E. Cagle, beloved husband of Helen, loving father of Nina, April, and Crystal, stepfather of Charles Wes Garretson, Wayne Dixon, Elizabeth Belcher, Joni Johnson, and Sarah Brade, and a host of adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, July 5, 2015. Survivors include his wife of 23 years Helen Cagle, brothers Rev. Oliver (Jimmy) Cagle and Fred Cagle, sister Jeanette Sprinkle, and many loving relatives and friends. On July 13, 1966, Cpl. Jon Everett Cagle, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Cagle of Mobile, was awarded the Bronze Star medal with the Combat "V" for "his heroic achievement against Viet Cong forces while a member of the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines." He was awarded the medal for his actions during Operation Utah when his squad leader was wounded and Cpl. Cagle took command. The citation accompanying the part: "... As the well entrenched Viet Cong continued to harass his squad, Cpl. Cagle retrieved an M-60 machine gun from a fallen Marine and delivered an effective covering fire for the rescue squad. He ably supervised the evacuation of the casualties, personally carrying several to covered positions. Exhibiting exceptional composure and resourcefulness when his squad became separated from the rest of the platoon during the fire fight he skillfully led his men through the darkness and enemy fire to the company perimeter. His bold action enabled a number of wounded Marines to receive prompt medical treatment and undoubtedly saved the lives of several. Cpl. Cagle's exceptional military proficiency, intrepid fighting spirit and unfaltering dedication to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." The award was made at Jackson, N.C. Cpl. Cagle was then assigned to the air facility provost marshal's office at the Marine Center in New River, N.C. Cagle grew up in Mobile where he attended Murphy High School. A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 8 from 5pm until 8pm at Serenity Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 9, at 12 noon in the chapel at Serenity Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will take place in Serenity Memorial Gardens.
