PERRY – Derek Mitchell Lowe, 39, passed away peacefully late Friday night, May 21, 2021. Graveside Services with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., in Andersonville National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Derek’s name may be made to the American Diabetes Association for Georgia, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, Virginia 22116-7023, or Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Derek was a true patriot. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He met and married the love of his life, Charlane Latonio, and started a family right away. While Charlane was home with their two boys, Derek traveled the world with the Army, a fearless and resilient Armor Crewman, a “Tanker.” He enjoyed woodworking, making gifts for his family and friends, and had a wildly funny sense of humor. Derek loved his life and lived it to the fullest. While stationed in Korea and on active duty, he suffered a horrific beating by an unknown civilian there, leaving Derek with a brain injury that would affect him for the rest of his life. As a direct result of the injury, Derek’s pancreas quit working, and he instantly became an insulin-dependent diabetic. He was given a medical retirement from the Army, the last thing Derek ever wanted when he voluntarily committed to spend his entire career serving our country. As his health gradually declined over the past few years, his love for his family grew even stronger. Derek watched his wife and young boys care for him and love him when he needed it most, and he knew the sacrifices they made regularly to stay home and be with him. Just days before his passing, Derek understood the greatest sacrifice of all, that God gave His only son, Jesus, to suffer for our sins. And as Derek was baptized on May 20, 2021, his faith in Jesus was strengthened, and his promise of Heaven was realized. What a legacy of Christianity and patriotism that he leaves behind. Left to cherish the memories they made with Derek are his loving and devoted wife of nearly 16 years, Charlane Lowe of Perry; his sons, D.M. Lowe, Jr., and J.C. Lowe; his parents, Rick and Darlene Lowe of Perry, and Brigetta and Bill Harold of Brownwood, Texas; his siblings, Brian Mourning of Byron, John Harold of Brownwood, Texas, Charlotte Harold of Ventura, California, and Kris Harold of Reno, Nevada; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Derek was predeceased by his sister, Megan Lowe. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
