Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Interment will be in Perry Memorial Gardens immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Charlie was born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, to the late Francis and Edna Austin Hughes. After graduating from high school, he met and married the love of his life, Joetta Prickett. Unable to find farmland to purchase in New Jersey, Charlie and Joetta’s father, Lyman, Sr., heard of its availability in Georgia. After purchasing a farm in Marshallville, Charlie and Joetta moved to Middle Georgia where they settled to work the land and raise their family. Charlie loved farming and was thankful to have his sons by his side, teaching them to love and appreciate the land and the work, just like him. His family was his whole world, and he was thrilled each time it grew. Through the years, Charlie loved taking his family camping. They would travel back to the family farm where he grew up to share his immediate family with his extended family in his own hometown. His love for camping grew so much that he invested in a family campground in Perry, Crossroads Camping, that he owned for over thirty years. Charlie was always interested in tractors and the progression of their development. When Georgia National Fair began in 1990, they asked Charlie to bring his antique tractor to display at the fair, which he was excited to do. Each year, Charlie’s participation in the fair has grown, and at the 2021 Georgia National Fair, the Hughes family proudly displayed over forty of their treasured antique tractors. Charlie always enjoyed trying to make people laugh, and sometimes he succeeded. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Hughes. Left to cherish the memories they made with Charlie are his loving and devoted wife of fifty-three years, Joetta Prickett Hughes of Marshallville; his children, Jodie H. Greene (Woody), Adam Hughes (Michelle), and Jamie Hughes (Lee), all of Marshallville; his grandchildren, Harlie Greene, Charlie Greene, Cash Greene, Chase Hughes, Colt Hughes, and Trent Hughes; his siblings, Ruth Kumpel (Roger) of Vincentown, New Jersey, and Donnie Hughes (Julie) of Ft. Valley; and many nieces and nephews. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
