Norma Cason Wilson Cheek

“Some people come into our lives and quickly go .... some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same....” Norma Cason Wilson Cheek, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2014 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Visitation is planned for Saturday, May 24th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday May 25th at 3:00 p.m. at the Perry First Baptist Church. The family will also receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall and also in the Sanctuary from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Interment will be in Perry Memorial Gardens. Norma was born August 16, 1920 in Tippettville, Ga at the rural home of her grandparents, Thudus Edgar (T. E.) and Lula Normanda Holt Noble. Originally named "Normanda Louisa," she was the eldest daughter of the late Warren Whitis and Ellen Noble Cason, Her name was later changed to “Norma Louise.” A graduate of Dooly County High School, Norma attended Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Georgia. Norma is preceded in death by her husband Julian Page Wilson. Norma and Julian eloped on December 25, 1938. The newlyweds lived in a home next to her parents on the family farm. In World War II, Julian joined the Navy. Due to health conditions, he was medically discharged, and once again began farming. In 1946, their son was born; in 1949 their daughter. In 1952, the family moved to Perry and for 20 years became active in community, educational and civic affairs until Julian’s untimely death on December 3, 1972 at age 58. On Christmas Day, Norma and Julian would have celebrated their 34th anniversary. Norma loved farming, animals, crossword puzzles, playing bridge and especially the Atlanta Braves and The Georgia Bulldogs. In the early 1970’s a group of ladies started the Monday Night Bridge Club. After their retirements, they became the Monday Afternoon Bridge Club. Norma also joined a Thursday afternoon bridge group at the New Perry Hotel. Like many Southern ladies, she had her weekly hair and nail appointments. Later in life, she loved to play “Sol” on the computer. Norma was employed at Robins Air Force Base for 20 years in the Material Management Directorate. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her friends on bus tours, gardening, painting and volunteering for various Perry events and church activities. For many years she weekly picked up her “little old ladies” to take them to Happy Hour at the First Baptist Church. Since 1973, Norma served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Perry Pilot Club serving twice as President. Norma was a charter member of the Perry Book Browsers Club, a member of the Perry Historical Society where she served as Secretary and a member of the Delphian Club where she served as President. Norma was also a member of the University of Georgia Presidents Club. She was also a longtime active member of Perry First Baptist Church and the Dot Hardy Sunday School class. Norma was instrumental in bringing the Salvation Army Store and the Salvation Army kettles to Perry. For many years during the Christmas Season, she stood in the cold weather ringing the bells in front of K-mart. Norma also was instrumental in helping to arrange for transients to get help at the Perry Fire Department. In 1975, the Perry Pilot Club named Norma the Pilot of the Year. In 1980, she was sponsored and honored to be selected Woman of the Year by the Club members. Norma married the late Earl H. Cheek, Sr. in July 1989, and enjoyed 23 years together attending Georgia football games, FFA meetings, educational events, agricultural meetings, traveling in the United States, dining and dancing at the Officer’s Club, weekly Kiwanis Club meetings, and one summer, traveling to Europe with Club members from other chapters. Family members who will hold dear their precious memories include her daughter, Dr. Judith Wilson; her son Norman P. “Sonny” Wilson (Kristine) of Bogart, GA; her granddaughters, Rebecca Wilson “Becky” Powell (Keith) of Perry GA and Normanda Claire “Manda” Wilson of Bogart, GA. and a grandson, Warren Julian Wilson, who preceded her in death; two great granddaughters Anna Claire Wilson and Claire Abigail Powell; three stepchildren, Earl H. Cheek, Jr. (Becky) of Baton Rouge, LA., Carol Ann Barckley (Ken) of Fountain Valley, CA and Mary Frances Larimer of Covington, GA; five step-grandsons, and eight step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, one sister, Lois Cason Wooten of Savannah, niece Ann Wooten Langston (Dudley) of Memphis TN and her children Frank Langston of San Francisco, CA and Katy Langston of Memphis, TN; cousins Laurie Bush Clarke (JB) of Donalsonville, GA; Marjorie Noble Lloyd of St. Pawley’s Island; Ret. Colonel John Allen Noble (Carole) of Athens, GA; Rev. Dr. William C. Noble (Liliane) of Tinton Falls, NJ, DiLane Oxford Noble of Folkston, GA; Billy Fallin (Barbara) of Moultrie, GA, Carolyn Brown of Pineview, GA., Don Wood, (Toni) of Rochelle GA., Sammy Wood (Beverly) of Watkinsville, Ga, Wilma “Bill” Tippett of Tippettville, Ga and one sister-in-law Peggy Zellner Wilson of Perry GA.
